Justin Nixon was a healthy 20-year old hiking the Appalachian Trail as a volunteer Boy Scout Leader (and Eagle Scout) in the 1990’s. Several days into his trek he became sick and had to leave the trail. He went home (Nashville, TN) and after several months of seeing different doctors and specialists, he was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy. He was told that one day he may need a kidney transplant. This is an immune-related condition that usually follows a viral infection of the upper respiratory or gastrointestinal tract. It is believed to affect as many as 130,000 people annually in the U.S.

Fast-forward two decades – Justin is now a 40-year old father of two (ages 6 and 13). Over the past 20 years, his disease progressed to End Stage Renal Disease. He has been on the kidney transplant list since 2014. In 2017 he finally had to start dialysis. He is still trying to work full time as a mental health counselor and be the best dad and husband he can.

If half of one percent (.5%) of adults in the U.S. donated a kidney, it would wipe out the list 15 times over! A person can live a long, healthy, normal life with one kidney.
